TWIT: Does anyone care anymore?
How the mighty hath fallen...so to speak.
I don't watch TWIT much these days and when I do I'm frequently disappointed. Which in itself is a surprise since I didn't think things could get any worse. Looking at the holiday offerings this year for example was much like last year. Just a bunch of "Best of's" which were compilations of anything but. Where were the Holiday themed episodes? The special round tables with the likes of John Hodgman and Jonanthan Coulton? Where's the New Year's Special!
Oh yeah, Leo don't do that anymore...
Truth be told, the promise of the TWIT was always far more grand than the product delivered. Big dreams, the resurgence of a 90's tech icon. A network built on a small but vocal demographic of those for whom their mantra, their religion, their dearest wish was all things tech.
It wasn't a hard sell for devotees of the defunct TechTV ( formerly ZDTV) basic cable channel. Leo Laporte was an affable "every-man" who just happened to have a silky smooth presentation and at least an idea of what he was talking about.
You never saw him confuse a Hard Drive with a Video card. He was someone you felt you could trust. A family man, someone like you and me. A trusted friend you drag along with you to CompUSA.
Yes, I'm dating myself but only in so much as the era where Laporte was relevant.
Now?
NotsoMuch...
A check of the current TWIT schedule reveals just how bad things really are. Entire days of the calendar are blank with most having maybe 2 shows recording and of those only a few stalwart remnants of the near-glory of the network's past.
Nostalgia wasn't enough and even Laporte's attempt to rekindle the vibe of his TechTV days has fallen flat with the announced cancellation of "The New Screen Savers." Gone as well are the Iyaz Akhtar created, Know How which in later years found itself increasingly squeezed to the margins and finally choked out of existence with the exit of replacement host Fr. Robert Ballacer.
The good Father's charisma was the only thing keeping many shows afloat in the past few years as he played stand-in for Laporte and other popular (mostly departed) hosts. His exit in June of 2018 might as well have been the death knell for the network with Laporte the only recognizable face left.
Those that might have taken up the reigns and brought the network to the lofty heights envisioned by its founder like Sara Lane, Tom Merritt, Brian Brushwood and Shannon Morse now long since gone.
Their content and audience driven programming replaced by bland, also-ran drivel only an advertiser could love.
It's not unlike so many popular YouTube channels that now focus their content almost exclusively at the pleasure of their paid sponsorship. Don't expect a sour word about a Geforce Card from a YouTuber with NVIDIA sponsorship for example.
So it is with TWIT. That which destroyed TECHTV has ultimately destroyed TWIT. It is now an also-ran competing with YouTube channels produced in somebody's garage for the same advertiser dollars. Laporte has admitted as much saying his reason for cancelling the New Screen Savers was he was trying to...
"do a network television show on a podcaster’s budget."
And the now all too familiar excuse for any show's demise on TWIT....
“The New Screen Savers” just hasn’t developed a big enough audience to pay for itself.". (source)
Yes folks, that's an admission of what TWIT is today. A lowly podcast channel with the overhead of a network broadcaster and every show under the gun to perform. Or so we would be led to believe.
Yet by Laporte's own admission the network was pulling in 13 to 14 million a year (source) which far exceeds 99% of even the largest YouTube channel's revenue. Apparently that's not enough as the studio moved to a smaller location in 2016 and has since axed or put on hiatus at least half a dozen shows.
Still it seems there's never enough money for TWIT and every show has to carry it's own weight. Yet inexplicably shows like Floss Weekly and Ham Nation continue unabated even though they cater to a subset of a niche at best.
Meanwhile shows more in line with TWIT's general demographic like Coding 101, Know How, This Week In Law and Game On get the axe.
That pool of money is a lot more contentious than it used to be too. In at least that much we can cut Laporte some slack for TWIT's failure.
TWIT is now competing for advertisers with those same YouTube channels (some led by former TWIT hosts) with far less lofty ideals but a far more consistent viewership.
A quick peek at the ads you'll see on the average YouTube tech channel are also found on TWIT. With most TWIT shows struggling to break into a 4 figure audience per episode no matter where you watch them (most are low 3 figure BTW) it's not TWIT dictating the terms anymore. Advertisers can find far greener pastures elsewhere.
Let's also not forget that YouTube creators don't have the overhead of TWIT (maybe) and can survive on much thinner margins (definitely) while providing the same mediocre content.
That said, none of the supposed financial strife at TWIT seems to have stopped Laporte and wife/[sic]CEO from extravagances like month-long European vacations or purchases of luxury items like his Tesla Model X (source)
There was a time when Laporte chafed at the idea of TWIT as a podcast network. Now, he clings to it for every bit of relevancy it can afford him.
And that aint much friends.
TWIT is now like a favorite TV series that over the years has replaced the entire cast and writing staff. Nothing remains but the set pieces and it's just not enough.
TWIT isn't dead but it's been a slow roll down the slope to the graveyard and we're far closer than we've been before.

Honesty
I'm not sure honesty is the best policy anymore. I'm not sure that's what anybody really wants.
To be honest is to accept the burden of it.
Nobody wants to live a lie but so too does anyone want to know everything. It's just too much too soon.
Truth is something meant to be unfolded over time with actions supporting the words. There are no shortcuts.
I know....
Words have power but action gives them substance. Honest intent, honest action needs no words.
The most honest response is often silence.
What causes more pain, an unkind word or silent indifference?
What causes more joy, a compliment or a warm embrace?
Honesty isn't really the problem, however, it's trying to use words so often inadequate to the task.
Honesty can exact a heavy price. One often paid alone.
Lies have no value, deception offers no refuge. Don't misunderstand, I don't advocate them here.
But too much honesty robs the future, destroys the magic and....
Everything in moderation or so they say.
"If only I'd known" A decision to deny an outcome that only resulted in the very outcome feared.
A reason for honesty that resulted in a different kind of pain. One I brought on myself.
Live in the moment, don't try to fashion the next. Take the light where its offered instead of demanding it appear.
If only I'd followed my own counsel.
Now I'm adrift. Unsure what to trust, unsure if I care.
In times like these all that's left is to search out the light and let it guide me.
It'll have to be enough.
It's all I really have if I'm honest with myself.
Heart Be Still....

Get a Job!
If I were you I'd be knocking on every door. You need to make some money!
This is a discussion (more of an argument) I actually had with a relative. Mind you, I'm not some Instagram obsessed teenager laying around the house binging on Netflix. For god's sake! I'm in my 40's.
I can't afford to binge on anything. That's what's so irritating.
It's one thing to be 20-something and have trouble finding work. Nobody judges you. Your frustration has more to do with unbridled ambition than a perceived character flaw.
If you've followed this blog for any amount of time you know my story. I've worked....hard. I've ticked off all the boxes; College, career, sacrifice, frugality. I followed the rules, kept my options open and always kept an ear to the ground.
All seemingly for nothing.
I had a fairly stable living for many years that allowed me to not only better myself but my family. Now that same family is harder to deal with than a bill collector.

These days I can barely afford to feed myself. To them it must seem like I've given up.
Thing is, I haven't but I'm far more disillusioned and frustrated than they are.
There was a time when there was always a fallback position. If you couldn't find work in your own field you could at least find something to keep you going til you did.
It doesn't take much investigation to find confirmation of what I always suspected was true. That being that regardless of the unemployment numbers and Wall Street rallies there are still way too many barriers to making a living.
Minimum wage hasn't kept up with the cost of living for a generation but worse than that the competition for jobs that offer it is staggering. Look at the candidates for these jobs and you find everything from the high school kid to PhD's.
Those who've never suffered the indignity of rejection for a low wage job don't understand. They believe there are still jobs whose only requirement is a warm body.
They're wrong.
These days even flipping burgers requires training on your own dime just to obtain a food handler's card. With that in hand you're well on your way to 25 hours a week crafting Angry Whoppers for the princely sum of $8.05/hr. Oh yeah, with benefits too, if you can afford the payroll deduction....
It gets worse....
Now we're hearing an uproar over raising the minimum wage to something in line with what it actually costs to live somewhere other than your car.
"It'll cause higher unemployment!"
"We can't afford to pay more!"
" It'll break the back of small business!"
Which ticks me off even more. While all these "job creators" game the system to overwork and underpay their current employees, they place hurdles in the way of new hires to ensure nothing changes.
There's no way around it and if you don't understand what I'm about to say I'm sorry but you're either bloody stupid or worse a selfish bastard.
Hiring someone full time for a wage they can't live on in a first-world country is institutionalized slavery.
Offering only part time hours and scheduling employees so that it's impossible for them to get another part time job is even worse. As an employer you're effectively forcing your workforce into poverty for no other reason than greed.
Don't give me that crap about high labor costs either. If you can't afford the means to sell your product you don't have a damned clue about how to properly run a business.
Employees are your partners not your slaves. Paying them shouldn't be looked at as "an inconvenience."
That's historical fact.
Meaning any business, especially BIG business that argues against a livable wage is taking the same position as the Civil War South. For them it was about cheap labor to improve their bottom line.
Sound familiar?
In America, it's not about some misguided fantasy of climbing the ladder of success. it's about production at the lowest possible cost. That means near poverty wages to keep an unskilled workforce forever unskilled and powerless. Now add in the yoke of the "Credit Economy" that exists only to perpetuate itself. A faceless beast fed by the poor. By the way, that includes you if you're only one paycheck from financial disaster.
It's hard to pull yourself up by the bootstraps if the boots have a 29% interest rate.
We, all of us of unfortunate birth are increasingly subject to the indecencies of an inadequate paycheck that won't even cover the basic necessities.
It's nothing less than indentured servitude.
Which comes to people like me. I'm not unskilled but I'm not especially talented either. So I'm right there with you.
I hear a lot of, "You're a top candidate" when applying for jobs in my field only to not get the job. A bit too much of hearing that lately meaning I've taken to applying for "seasonal" positions with local retail stores.
Even then the whole premise is twisted..

You're actually better off if you never did anything with your life. Otherwise that 6 figure resume becomes another hurdle to overcome fighting for a job you don't really want for a wage you can't really afford.
BTW, it's damned hard to dumb down a professional resume for $8.05/hr. Nobody's going to believe you've been sitting on your ass for 30 years of your life. The background check ( that they all run ) will show your lie anyway. So no, acting stupid isn't an answer...
Who the hell actually prepares a resume for a minimum wage retail job anyway? What are you going to say? Stocked shelves, greeted customers, kissed ass? All that crap fits on the application. Resume's are for the jobs you work after you get the hell out of retail.
Anyway, more to the point: that there's any expectation that working retail is a great career move is lunacy. I know, it's what I did when I was in high school 1000 years ago and I knew I didn't want to do it when I was my age now.
Give me a break. Once everyone's returned their Christmas gifts and yanked down the baubles and twinkly lights you're out the door buddy.
If'someone like me is on your doorstep looking for work, I'm fucking serious about being there. I've taken a deep breath, swallowed my pride and committed to the relationship.
By the way, never, ever tell me I need to swallow my pride.
I've been so beaten up that I don't have any left. I've seriously entertained a job delivering and cleaning port-a- potties. The only thing that stopped me was the lack of a commercial driver's license and being in my 40's. Meaning I'm not sure I can lift 100 pounds 30 times a day every day on a job with no health benefits. ( That's what the ad actually said BTW )
I'm mad as hell that I'm being denied a living ( as corrupt as the word is in this country) and even angrier when someone assumes I'm not doing enough to improve my situation.
I'm also sick of being judged by people who don't deserve the jobs they have. Worse, when they cast aspersions on someone like me who's been in the field longer than they've been out of high school.
That sounds arrogant but remember, I know from whence I speak. Most of the people I've interviewed with (with rare exception) got their positions through the buddy system. I only say that because part of my interview preparation involves looking them up on LinkedIn. I've found IT directors whose last job was a sales director and others with no IT or management training at all.
I really don't care how they got their jobs just so long as it doesn't have an effect on me getting hired. Unfortunately, it does...
It's an old boys network and I DO MEAN old BOYS. I've yet to meet a female IT director. I doubt I'd have as much bullshit if I did. The nice thing about having a female manager is that chances are she's gone through a lot of crap to get where she is. That tends to minimize the games because she just doesn't have the time for it.
It's natural for the male of the species to feel threatened when someone better than him has come along even if he gets to boss you around. In my experience women don't engage in that kind of pissing contest.
If you think this is just a bunch of whining and excuses then put yourself in my shoes for a minute.
You're in you 40's, lost all your income and can't replace it. Nobody takes you seriously when you apply for low-wage jobs and your relatives don't want to talk to you unless you're sending them a check.
Pull myself up by my bootstraps? My boots have holes in the soles buddy.
It doesn't stop me but what slows me down is your misinformed judgement. I'm putting it out there, no agenda but to survive.
Until you know what I'm going through (and I'm pretty sure most don't) keep your admonitions to yourselves and thank your creator that you don't have to be here.
I won't quit but I know a lot of people that dismiss me would have long ago.
That makes me better than them and if nothing else, that's worth living for. There needs to be a change and perhaps I need to feel the effects to understand how badly it needs to happen.

Is anybody out there?
What do I have to do?
I don't get it...
Or at least I think
I don't get it...
I'm not the social media butterfly that many are but you
will find active accounts in places like Facebook, Twitter, Google plus and
even about.me among others. All are
maintained and updated frequently.
I've got 4 active YouTube channels and accounts on two game
streaming services (TWITCH and HITBOX).
I've been published online over 100 times on (former) news sites like
Technorati and Kupeesh! and even had an article or two mentioned on Leo
Laporte's TWIT.
I've branded my work in hopes that the brand will follow the
creator. I've taken great pains to try
to provide quality content in easily
digestible and searchable formats. I've
torn down a YouTube channel only to reconstitute the content into separate more
focused channels because someone told me viewers like it better that way.
I'm still waiting for proof of that. I've gone from being able to at least make a few bucks a year to virtually nothing since the change.
Which has led me to the realization that contrary to YouTube's advice, I don't believe most people who use YouTube could give a damn about the channel organization.
Hey, you do a Google search and Boom! Content is served up regardless of the portal it resides on. That's both the beauty and the Achilles heel of services like YouTube.
Even being owned by a search giant can't guarantee visibility of your content.

Even being owned by a search giant can't guarantee visibility of your content.
So I've done all of that stuff I'm supposed to do and still I'm lucky to make pennies a
day.
So how bad is it?
So how bad is it?
It's been almost a year since I've had an adsense payment and never received a dime from my Amazon "partnership."
BTW The threshold for a payout from Google Adsense is $100.
So I guess I just suck then?
Content not interesting enough?
I've seen much worse do far better so I don't think that's it.
Perhaps it has more to do with those who do well online being at the right place at the right time for their niche.
I think it's far more likely, however, that online success is simply a byproduct of success elsewhere.
Silky smooth radio voice or not would Leo Laporte have ever gotten TWIT off the ground without a stint in television and a long career in radio? I doubt it. I've heard better content elsewhere that struggles to match a fraction of the revenue.
Want more evidence? Simply look who's consistently hitting the top 20 in online media. Personalities like Adam Carolla and Marc Maron, News organizations like NPR and the Huffington Post not to mention tabloid TV like TMZ with the balance consisting of celebrity and fluff sites. In short, we knew about them (or at least some incarnation of them) long before the Internet.*
It doesn't mean their content is any better. They're just leveraging a traditional media presence online.
So how fair is that?
For me it seems an online presence is less the great equalizer and more just adding to the noise.
I admit, being a bit older than most online dwellers there
may be a generational bias that I'm at least in part struggling to overcome.
For example, when I write about gaming I'm not going to be
anyone's fanboy. Nobody's paying me to
talk them up and if they did you could be sure I'd let you know about it.
I wouldn't promote anything I didn't like so
no worries there.
Still, I've been critical of the antics of the publishers like
EA, Activision and Ubisoft. I could care
less about gussied up game trailers and technical demos. I'll put it to you this way. Battlefield 4's demo was awesome, the final
product...notsomuch. There's a lot of
people who agree with that but I'm not seeing them around here.
Thing is, just like everything else those that pander to the hype seem to get the lion's share of views.
Thing is, just like everything else those that pander to the hype seem to get the lion's share of views.
I don't just write about gaming either (obviously...) I'll tackle
current events, politics and anything else that sparks a point of view. In fact that's what this particular blog is for. That's why it's tagline is:
"Uncategorized reading for the randomized mind"
Perhaps that's the problem.
Nobody can identify with me.
I've been called overly negative, a troll not to mention any
number of profanities. I dunno, I just
call 'em like I see 'em but it seems that if you don't buy into the prevailing
online fads you're somehow a deviant.
Which to me signals the final evolution of online
culture. It's become as commercial and
shallow as anything Hollywood could come up with. It seems online success comes only to those either willing to put aside critical thinking or who've already made their mark elsewhere.
Now before anyone runs off claiming my problem stems from
being an arrogant a-hole with an overactive troll complex I'll simply give you
this statistic.

All of them were critical of TWIT. Meaning what people seem to like the most is a more critical point of view.
Which implies that....
If you write an article about Leo's penis pics you can guarantee 5K views. Write about a good book you read and you see 12.
Which implies that....
If you write an article about Leo's penis pics you can guarantee 5K views. Write about a good book you read and you see 12.
Yeah, so take that you...you...troll!
But seriously, the most popular stuff I ever wrote I never really wanted to write. That being, the downfall and slow disintegration of someone I once held up as role model.
So I guess negativity isn't the problem. If I was as big an ass as some have made me out to be I'd have a lot larger readership from the numbers I see.
So the real question is, what kind of posts do you really want to see?
What do you think folks? Glass half full or half empty?
I'll publish your answers in an upcoming article.
I'll publish your answers in an upcoming article.
...Of which there will be none if I don't get any.
Up to you. <drops microphone>

TWIT: Why the Totaldrama's of the world ever existed...
It's fairly obvious at this point that TWIT has lost a lot
of fan base. With popular hosts exiting
and shady personal dramas playing out in front of all those Canon G10's in the
studio, it's been a wild 4 years. The
net result is a network short on talent and long on expenses.
Even Laporte's "The Tech Guy" radio show hasn't
escaped the black cloud that hangs over the network. Just in the past 6 months for example, the
show has virtually disappeared from the Phoenix area.
Dropped entirely from station 1480 AM KPHX, the only area frequency the show is still heard is the relative backwater 1000 watt 1230AM KFYI. A station better known for its "B-list" conservative talk-radio programming. That may not seem like a big deal until you realize that the Phoenix market ranks 13 (of 272) in the most recent Nielsen Market rankings.

A station better known for its "B-list" conservative talk-radio programming. That may not seem like a big deal until you realize that the Phoenix market ranks 13 (of 272) in the most recent Nielsen Market rankings.
I've often said that perhaps the problem with TWIT is that
we see too much of the sausage being made.
From poorly timed sexting messages exposing an illicit affair to the
brutal dressing down of a fan favorite host, TWIT's transparency has had a
large role in dismantling a facade that Laporte has spent a career nurturing.
Blame him, blame his so-called "CEO," blame
whomever you want but the simple fact of the matter is that Laporte is
blatantly fallible and unapologetically so.
So when the banner of wholesome, family friendly content is
hoisted nobody is buying it anymore.
Meaning TWIT's days are numbered. Nobody likes to see the seedy underbelly of
their heroes especially advertisers.
Which leads us to Totaldrama.org or more recently Totaldrama.eu...
It is (soon to be was) a site devoted exclusively to
badgering the TWIT network and more specifically Laporte himself.
Irreverent isn't an adequate enough adjective to describe
the vitriol slung at TWIT by the site.
It chronicles every misstep, every crude remark and every gaff.
It fed a disgruntled fan base looking for an
outlet but soon that outlet will be no more.
While entertaining, the site could never be accused of having much in
the way of journalistic integrity. Most recent posts were trending toward outright
rants and insults based on little more than unsubstantiated personal opinion.
While it's true that controversy is far more popular than
more thoughtful content on the web, it's not a sustainable business model. Especially when the target of your attacks
has a shrinking audience.
The failure of totaldrama.eu shouldn't be looked upon as a
vindication of TWIT's current course, however.
TWIT's not gaining any fans and the shows continue to fall in the
podcast rankings. The simple truth is
that it's far more likely that the failure of totaldrama.eu has far more to do
with an apathy toward TWIT.
In short we just don't care anymore...

TWIT: It's official Sarah Lane is out
So I'm sitting home watching tonight's dinner of Mac and Cheese bubble when I hear the familiar
"ding!" of my email notification.
Ah well, just another bit of spam I suppose...
Except it wasn't...
For 2 years we've borne witness to the exit of TWIT's
most popular hosts including Tom Merritt, Kirsten Sanford (Dr. Kiki), Bryan Brushwood and now...
Sarah Lane.
From a Twitter post, the longtime TWIT
sidekick and ever faithful Sarah Lane
(@sarahlane) announced
that she would be leaving the full time employ of TWIT for a position as
executive producer of video for TechCrunch (a news site focusing on tech companies.)
As of this writing nothing has been posted about the move on
the TechCrunch site but the announcement was posted on Sarah Lane's personal
blog and validated by a similar entry on
TWIT's
blog.
According to TWIT's posting Sarah will continue
to co-host Ipad Today and IFive for the Iphone *note
Along with Lane's departure comes news that longtime This Week in Google co-host Gina Trapani
(@ginatrapani) will be "scaling back her involvement with the show to focus on her own venture,
"ThnikUp." She'll also be
leaving the Android News show, All About
Android.
Lastly, With all the exits comes a rare entrance,
Megan Morrone (@meganmorrone). Morrone is
another alumnus from TechTV and an early
TWIT
host of the show Jumping Monkeys. She'll be taking over hosting duties from
Lane for Tech News Tonight and IFive for the Iphone.
The message is clear.
This is not the TWIT you knew and all traces of the
Merritt era of TWIT have now been wiped away replaced by a host known for more
family friendly topics like geek parenting than hard hitting tech news.
From a recent tweet from Morrone on Twitter..." I just used my Gmail address to sign into my
OneDrive account on my MacBook. And I'd like to buy the world a Coke."
Expect more scintillating commentary like that in future
episodes of Tech News Tonight...
It remains to be seen how the family values of Morrone will
react to the innuendo and bawdy antics of a frequently lewd Laporte.
The departure of Lane above all else signals for many (myself included) the end of TWIT. But for Lane, given the network's direction, it's likely the best career decision she could make and I wish her success..
I began this series of articles by
referencing the old adage of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. It now appears we've not only thrown out the
baby but have taken a grenade to the entire bathroom...
*You may notice a contradiction there. In the earlier TWIT posting about Sarah
Lane it was mentioned that she would continue IFive for the Iphone but the
later Morrone announcement lists her as the new host. Perhaps some last minute shuffling at play
here.

Maricopa Community Colleges: An "insecure" letter...
Got a letter the other day and it said this...
"On October 19th, 2013 we
determined that your information including: your name, address, phone number,
e-mail address, Social Security number, date of birth, certain demographical
information and enrollment, academic and financial aid information may have been
accessed without authorization. The
system did not contain credit card information or personal health information."
Oh, well
that's a relief, at least they didn't get the credit cards...Oh wait, did I shop at Target last month?
The Maricopa
Community College District (MCCD) is the largest community college district in
the state of Arizona and one of the largest in the nation serving over 200,000 students every year.
I signed up
for a class with them once. I know I applied
for employment on more than one occasion as well. Why anyone needed an SSN or Date of Birth for
either considering I was never employed or completed that class is a mystery.
There's
other far less personal information that can identify a person and cause far
less damage if compromised. Ahh, but I
forgot, in the post 911 era we're expected to lay ourselves bare trusting that
the recipients of our most personal of information will be good stewards. Of course, all in the name of security.
Which makes
it ironic that "security" is the very thing that's failed us.
They didn't
get the credit card information... Who cares!
Whomever benefitted from this "info-heist" now has enough
information to create scores of false identities and cause irreparable harm to
the victims of the breach.
People get a
bit too cavalier about their personal information sometimes. I live in Arizona and around the time I was
getting my first driver's license, the state actually encouraged motorists to
use their SSN as their driver's license number.
Of course that was back in the day when credit card numbers were stolen
off discarded carbon paper not the Internet.
People are
admonished to carefully control access to their private information but
increasingly we're asked to give that responsibility over to private and public
institutions that aren't worthy of that trust.
It needs to
stop. Along with credit checks on job
applications and the requirement to give your SSN for anything but obtaining a
loan or starting, not applying for, a
new job. In those cases at least you
know the chain of custody of your information.
It's your
PERSONAL information and you shouldn't be ostracized for protecting it. Especially when those demanding it obviously
can't be trusted to keep it safe.
Support
measures like Senator Elizabeth Warren's "Equal Employment for All Act" that blocks the requirement for credit reports
on job applications. That measure would
also prevent the haphazard collection of SSN's and other personal information
as well.
